Dark Betrothal

I recently attended a wedding. You know how weddings are in SL–lots of pomp and tradition. A bride hooking up with a groom in an overdecorated lag-filled space with too many blingy prims and a deadening silence as everyone is either busy sorting inventory or snickering at the other guests in IM. We all sit nicely in our wedding best, attending to the bride and groom as witnesses to their union and wait through the ceremony until we can throw ourselves on a poseball and dance and gape at the wedding cake that always seems to taste like nothing so much as styrofoam.
This wedding was different though. It was the union of two very like souls–both dear people, both amazing individuals in their own right. They had fallen in love in SL AND in RL. This would be the first step in their declaring their eternal love for one another.
They had found each other because both were also very unique–Annika was deeply into Gothic culture. She felt things intensely, almost dramatically, but rather silently. She sought a man strong enough to hold her tender heart, who would read her tempers through the pulse on her neck as he kissed her, who would thrill at her ever-changing moods. She had been, frankly, not entirely successful in love. Many men just didn’t “get” her.
Byron was tall, dark, handsome, highly sought after by many women for the power and strength he registered, but he was bewildered by their adoration. He was very solitary, brooding and quiet. No woman had really penetrated beyond his looks to understand his inner self. But he found what he was looking for in Annika–he adored her pale, almost powdered skin, her wounded eyes and exquisitely red lips in contrast, her long thick raven locks. He wanted nothing so much as to wrap her in his coat and hold her, warm against him all the time, and speak to her softly in their language with their words of mutual love and support.
Annika and Byron came to Raven before the ceremony and asked her to help with a dress. Raven looked a bit skeptical–what would she make to suit this unique bride and groom? She spent weeks. I was constantly walking into the studio to find laces and satins and silks and flowers and buttons flung around–creams, whites, silvers–the most beautiful things she could assemble. But nothing suited.
Raven later told me how she came upon the solution. One morning, she sat down in disgust, frustrated that she could not make something to suit Annika. In doing so, she tipped over a jar of ink she had open while she had been drawing ideas. The ink spread over a white brocade she had left lying across the desk. And Raven was inspired. She leapt up to make the dress.
What she made for Annika was indeed inspired–it evoked Annika’s darkness as well as her hope. It was all black–rich as India ink, deep as her eyes. Lush brocade covered the full regal skirt and swept up over the bodice with fine silver buttons lining the corset. Puffy Victorian sleeves highlighted the shoulders and accentuated the narrow waist. A dramatic high collar framed the face, and lace-cuffed black gloves finished off the look. The dark lace veil would accent her fine features with small blackred satin roses along the back. Underneath, well… the groom had something to look forward to later with the sexy lace panties and stockings and the optional open skirt Annika could wear in the bedroom.
Raven made a handsome accompanying suit for Byron. A fine tweed morning suit fit over a black shirt with a handsomely bow-tied collar. Pants with Raven’s characteristically well-fitting seat finished the outfit. As options, she included a white button-up shirt and short tails for the jacket, so Byron could wear the suit later when he took Annika out dancing. And she headed the whole ensemble with a gentlemanly top hat. Byron would sweep Annika off her feet.
Raven was so inspired she sewed a dress in red brocade and three more suits in black brocade, red brocade and red tweed. Each was more incredible than the next.
And Annika and Byron? They were thrilled. I watched them as they gazed at each other during the ceremony, my inventory for once left alone, my IMs empty. I could see they were locking into their memories the sight of each other in their most perfect forms–still flawed but utterly beautiful to each other. I will admit I cried a little–it was amazing.
